A devastating fire at a nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, has left at least 59 people dead and 155 injured, sparking national mourning and a criminal investigation. Authorities have detained 10 suspects, including government officials, amid allegations of negligence and corruption linked to the venue’s illegal operations.
A Night of Horror in Kocani
The fire broke out around 2:30 AM at the Pulse Club, a repurposed carpet warehouse that had been operating as an improvised nightclub. Around 500 people had gathered for a concert by DNK, one of North Macedonia’s most popular hip-hop duos.
Eyewitnesses describe chaotic scenes as the flames spread rapidly across the venue’s ceiling, ignited by pyrotechnics used during the performance. With only a single functional exit, panic ensued as hundreds of concertgoers scrambled to escape the inferno.
“I was crushed in the crowd as people tried to get out,” said Marija Taseva, a survivor. “I fell to the ground, and others trampled over me. Somehow, I managed to get up and escape—but my sister didn’t make it.”
Authorities confirmed that many of the victims were under 18, with the majority of those affected being between 18 and 20 years old.
Negligence and Corruption Under Scrutiny
Initial investigations revealed multiple safety violations at the venue. Prosecutor Biljana Arsovska reported that the club lacked a proper fire suppression system and had its emergency exit locked at the time of the incident.
“There were critical deficiencies in fire safety, and only one effective exit for a venue of this size,” Arsovska stated. “This is an unacceptable failure that cost dozens of young lives.”
Authorities have detained 10 individuals, including officials from government ministries responsible for issuing the club’s operating license. Allegations of bribery and corruption are now central to the investigation.
Interior Minister Pance Toskovski confirmed that the club was operating without legal approval. “This tragedy could have been prevented. We are now examining whether corruption played a role in allowing this venue to function despite clear safety risks.”
Scenes of Desperation and Loss
Disturbing footage from the nightclub shows concertgoers initially unaware of the imminent danger, some attempting to extinguish the flames before realising the severity of the situation.
Medical teams across the country are treating victims with severe burns and smoke inhalation. Dr. Vladislav Gruev, a surgeon specialising in reconstructive procedures, reported that many patients suffered second- and third-degree burns on their faces, necks, and upper bodies.
“The injuries are severe, and for some, survival remains uncertain,” he said.
Hospitals initially struggled to identify victims, as many did not have ID cards with them. Meanwhile, forensic teams are working to identify the deceased.
National Mourning and International Reactions
The North Macedonian government has declared seven days of national mourning, as flags fly at half-mast and the country reels from the devastating loss.
“This is a dark day for our nation,” said Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski. “We have lost many young lives, and we will leave no stone unturned to ensure justice for the victims.”
European leaders have expressed their condolences. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU stands in solidarity with North Macedonia, while Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić described the tragedy as “of immense magnitude.”
